To the Editorial Team of Le Courrier des Stratèges,
We are writing to address incorrect claims about Mr. Alisher Usmanov in the article “Au bon coin macroniste : "Echange parapluie nucléaire contre espion français en prison"” of 24 September 2026 published on your website.
Our concerns relate to the following sections:
• “Comme nous l'avions annoncé hier, la France a fait pression pour sortir un oligarque russe de la liste des sanctions européennes en échange de la libération d'un espion français emprisonné en Azerbaïdjan”;
• “Finalement, l'Union Européenne a accédé aux voeux français, et l'oligarque Ousmanov a disparu de la liste des sanctionnés”.
It is incorrect and unjustly damaging to refer to Mr. Usmanov as an “oligarch”. The appropriate use of the label “oligarch” presupposes individuals who became wealthy thanks to close ties with the Russian state in the 1990s, profiting from privatizations and the so-called “loans for shares” auctions. Such a scenario is entirely unrelated to Mr. Usmanov’s entrepreneurial background, as he built his wealth completely independently and did not participate in the privatization of Russian state assets or in the loans-for-shares auctions in the 1990s. On this point, it is worth noting that the EU Council, in the updated rationale (see #673), stopped using the term “oligarch” in association with Mr. Usmanov - thus recognising the previous language as incorrect - before ultimately removing him from the EU sanctions list altogether.
Please note that in 2023–2026 more than 3,200 publications in which similar false statements were made, were corrected following both out-of-court and litigation proceedings across more than 60 countries worldwide, including all 27 EU member states. These include Antena 3 CNN, Blick, Blitz, Business Insider, Corriere della Sera, Aftonbladet, Daily Finland, Deutsche Welle, Die Presse, Die Welt, DPA, BGNES, Dnesplus, Ekonomický deník, Well.pl, Euronews, European Interest, Handelszeitung, Il Messaggero, Il Post, Il Sole 24 Ore, La Nuova Sardegna, La Stampa, Lõunaeestlane, Luxembourg Times, Nordjyske, Notícias ao Minuto, RTL, Stern, The EU Reporter, The Sun, The Times, The Washington Post, Universul, ZDF and many others.
